Skils Acquisition Program
SSFC is proud to offer the Skill Acquisition Program (SAP) to the Hunter and Upper Hunter Region.
SAP provides a clear, professionally delivered development opportunity for young footballers in NSW which underpins the National Premier Leagues NSW Men’s and Women’s competitions.
WHAT IS SAP?
The Skill Acquisition Program (SAP) is an elite competition for junior boys and girls who wish to advance beyond local club football and play against representative teams from the Newcastle and Hunter Region. The Skill Acquisition Program provides young players with a positive and challenging football environment, while preparing players to progress into the Northern League One and Northern Premier League juinor competitions.
It is based on a National Curriculum to perfect and accelerate the skill development of identified players at the critical ages of 10 to 13. This is the age group universally acknowledged to be the ideal mental and physical stage in development which children are able to acquire motor skills.
The program is conducted from November to September. Breaks will be taken for school holidays (unless stipulated by Northern NSW Football).

To provide the necessary technical ‘tools’ to players in order to help them be able to play the game at the highest possible level with a focus on functional game skills.
The Skill Acquisition Program focuses on the development of the four core skills:
- Striking the ball
- First Touch
- Running with the ball
An absolute requirement is placed on an immediate skills transfer into positioning and small-sided games. It is based on world’s best practice and has been developed by internationally acclaimed technical coaches and the FFA technical department.
Appropriately qualified coaches will focus on a specific core skill in training, with two games per week during the playing season providing players the opportunity to test these skills in a competitive environment. It is important to recognise that the match in isolation should not be the focus of the coach or parent.
WHAT AGES WILL SAP COVER?
Singleton Strikers Football Club (SSFC) will field mixed junior SAP teams for U9, U10 and U11 age groups. In 2021 the program will be expanded to cover U12’s.
HOW OFTEN WILL SAP TEAMS PLAY?
Generally SAP teams play most weekends from March through to September. Each SAP team plays two games per weekend. Games are played on the same day at the same location. Games may be held on either a Saturday or a Sunday. This is not a result based competition; it‘s about development only.
WHEN DO THE SAP TEAMS TRAIN?
SAP teams generally train together as a SAP squad two evenings per week in Singleton for approximately 1 hour per session. The SAP squad generally train at the same time of the SSFC Northern League One teams so they are exposed to, and inspired by older players and coaching staff.
